What it does:
Alignment refers to an adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension – the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It is not an adjustment of the tires or wheels themselves. The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tires which affects how they make contact with the road.
When do wheels need to be aligned:
If your vehicle tracks as straight as an arrow, you’re wheels likely are properly aligned. Even so, it’s a good idea to have your alignment checked annually, such as when you have your tires rotated. You certainly should have it done when you buy new tires so they don’t immediately start to wear unevenly.

How to tell if your tires require aligning:

  • Pulling to one side
  • Uneven tread wear
  • Your steering wheel is crooked when driving straight
  • Squealing Tires

Here are some ways to fix your alignment at home:

  • Remove junk from your trunk. Alignment is based on tire angles, which go hand-in-hand with vehicle chassis height. If you have too much weight loading down your back end, that lowers your vehicle height, throwing off your alignment. Remove what you don’t need, and make sure to have your alignment check since your alignment can’t adjust itself.
  • Maintain correct air pressure in your tires.
  • Embrace conservative driving. It will place less strain on steering and suspension components which are key to maintaining proper alignment.

But know, it’s necessary after having any type of front end work done to get your tires aligned, and it’s good to at least have it checked a couple times of a year to ensure that your tires are wearing evenly, your steering wheel and your vehicle as a whole is straight and in-line.
